car seatsChannel 4 is reporting that a horrible accident occurred this weekend that resulted in teh death of a baby.  FHP is investigating a crash that killed an 8-month-old child and injured six others. It happened about 3:30 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 17 in Jacksonville. A 2008 Land Rover  was traveling southbound on U.S. 17 with four passengers.  Troopers say the Land Rover turned left toward the Interstate 295 east beltway ramp into the path of a Ford Explorer traveling north on U.S. 17.  The Explorer was unable to stop and hit the right side of the Land Rover.  One of the two people inside the Explorer suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to U.F. Health. Of the five people inside the Land Rover, one passenger died, an 8-month-old.  The driver and another passenger were taken to UF Health with minor injuries. Two other passengers were taken to UF Health with serious injuries.  FHP said the baby was in a car seat but it is still investigating if the seat was properly installed.  Troopers said everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt. Investigators are waiting to see if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
All of us at Edwards & Ragatz offer our condolences to the family of the eight month old and hope that the other injured occupants heal quickly.
It is sad to read that there may have been a question of whether or not the baby’s car seat was installed properly.  It is estimated that about 80% of car seats are misused, either because a child is in the wrong seat, the seat is installed wrong, or the child is not placed in the seat correctly.
Are you using your car seat correctly?  If you’re not sure, consider visiting a Child Passenger Safety Inspection Station, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes as ‘a place where parents and caregivers can learn how to safely transport children by using the appropriate child safety seat or safety belt correctly; a one-on-one tutorial instruction provided by certified CPS technicians on the proper use and installation of child restraints. Visiting an inspection station can also help to make sure you are keeping up with the latest car seat guidelines too.   Click here to find a Child Car Seat Inspection Station Locator by you.
