Jennifer Millis, an attorney at Edwards & Ragatz P.A., has been invited to speak on a panel about patient privacy and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act issues, at the 2010 Florida Bar Convention in Boca Raton, Fla.

The symposium is part of the bar’s continuing legal education program and will be chaired by three people: Millis; William Dillon, an attorney with Messer, Caparello & Self in Tallahassee, Fla.; and Jack Hartog, an attorney with Gray Robinson, Miami. All three were chosen by Charmaine Chiu, a shareholder at Smith Hulsey & Busey, Jacksonville, who has been chair of the CLE  programs for the health law section of the Florida Bar Convention for three years.

œWe really needed someone who is very familiar with medical malpractice work and patient privacy issues, Chiu said. œJennifer came to mind because she has done a lot of medical malpractice litigation in the past and has quite a good reputation in the way she handles the things she has.

Millis has been an attorney for 11 years, specializing in health care, medical malpractice and nursing home litigation.

Those attending the three-hour symposium will get three hours of ethics and regular CLE credits. There is no fee for the symposium, Chiu said, but attendees will need to register for the annual meeting.

œThe convention is for all lawyers and our panel discussion will tell them how to handle the ethics and responsibilities for patient information, in particular the HIPAA Privacy Rule and Security Rule Basics, Millis said. œOur panel includes Bill Dillon, who represents hospitals, Jack Hartog, who represents physician groups, and myself, who represents patients. It is a well balanced group.

The symposium is from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, June 25, at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. The convention will be held June 23-26. For more information visit The Florida Bar website.
