When consumers purchase products, especially food, they want to feel that their purchases will not be harmful to them later on. Some products could have a manufacturing error or were not handled properly during processing that could lead to consumers becoming injured or seriously ill. While many companies do their best to ensure the safety of their products, potentially dangerous products do occasionally come onto the market, and customers are negatively affected.    Recently, chicken from Foster Farms has been linked to several cases of salmonella.  In fact, at least 317 cases of salmonella illness have been linked to Foster Farms chicken products.  Federal safety officials have notified the public to avoid raw Foster Farms chicken products . According to the Public Safety Alert, raw products that came from the three facilities in question will have one of these unique identifying numbers inside of a USDA mark of inspection or somewhere on the packaging: ¢ œP6137 ¢ œP6137A ¢ œP7632   FSIS (U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Services) also says that the products were mainly distributed to retail outlets in California, Oregon and Washington State. The majority of the 317 reported illnesses have been in California, but NBC News reports that people in 20 states have been sickened.
The strain linked to this outbreak is known as Salmonella Heidelberg. Salmonella-related illnesses are some of the most common foodborne illnesses, but infections can be serious and even life-threatening especially, for the very young and the elderly. According to the FSIS, œthe most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.   Though salmonella is considered a common bacterial illness relating to food, it can still prove fatal to some individuals. As this strain is apparently causing more hospitalizations than other outbreaks, affected parties could be facing serious medical bills in relation to their recovery. As a result, individuals may wish to gather information on state product liability laws in order to determine whether Foster Farms could be held liable for the illnesses caused by their product, and if those affected may be entitled to compensation.
