Man and pregnant woman killed in crash

© OptoXAnother tragic accident has occurred here in Northeast Florida. Channel 4 reports on a car accident in Columbia County where a young couple died Friday afternoon when they were ejected from a Smart car after it was struck by a Chevrolet Camaro, then a Chevrolet Cavalier on U.S. Highway 441. Troopers say the southbound Camaro was in the southbound lane passing a line of slow traffic near the intersection of Catherine Road about 1 p.m. when the driver saw a car turn south onto U.S. 441. The driver of the Camaro swerved back into the southbound lane, where he struck the right rear of Smart car that was turning onto 441. The smaller car was pushed into the northbound lane, where it was struck on the right side by the third vehicle. The driver (who was pregnant) and the passenger of the Smart car were ejected and died at the scene. Troopers indicated neither victim was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the Cavalier — was seriously injured and taken to UF Health/Shands in Gainesville. Three passengers in his car were also transported to UF/Shands with injuries. The report says charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
