Keep Safe and Keep the Party Off The Road This Halloween

The Florida Highway Patrol is trying to make Halloween less scary.  State troopers are cracking down on drunken driving and offering safety tips to parents of young ghouls and goblins.  FHP is participating in a national drunken driving campaign that began Thursday, October 25  and will continue through November 4. It’s called “ Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.   It is an aggressive crackdown on impaired drivers that will be throughout the Jacksonville and all Northeast Florida areas. If you think a Halloween costume will disguise your drunk driving, the Florida Highway Patrol has a message just for you, “keep the party off the road.”

œThe Patrol continues to make driving under the influence (DUI) enforcement a priority, said Col. David Brierton, director of the Florida Highway Patrol. œIn an effort to get impaired drivers off the road, troopers will be vigilant throughout the state with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crack down.

To keep safe this Halloween, FHP recommends these tips:

  • Plan a safe way to get home before the festivities begin.
  • Before drinking, designate a sober driver.
  • If you are impaired, take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation to get home safely.
  • Remember, friends don’t let friends drive drunk.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is a deterrence program with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that focuses on combining high-visibility enforcement with heightened public awareness. For more information on the campaign, click here or visit Florida Highway Patrol homepage

As to Halloween safety tips for parents and young trick or treaters, The FHP website provides helpful information on safety tips.  They include using light-colored costumes and putting reflective tape on costumes and goody bags so they’ll be more visible to motorists.
