Head on Crash

Two people are dead and two people are in critical condition after a head on crash last week involving four vehicles on State Road A1A.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. when a Mercury Sable traveling south hit a Ford Fusion that was traveling north.  The elderly couple in the Ford were killed. According to the FHP report, the driver of the Mercury Sable Schwarz had been drinking.  Troopers said the driver of the Mercury was passing an Infinity Sedan that was also traveling south on A1A. The Ford was pushed into the path of the Infinity and then was struck again by the front of the Infinity. The driver of the Mercury and a passenger in the Infinity were in critical condition at Flagler Hospital.  A Buick LaCrosse was traveling northbound on A1A was struck at the Infinity rotated counter-clockwise into its path. None of the four people were injured.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of the deceased and those who were injured in this horrific accident. It appears that this tragic accident could have been avoided.

Head-on crashes usually happen when a vehicle crosses a centerline or a median and crashes into an approaching vehicle. A head-on crash can also occur when a driver knowingly or unknowingly travels the wrong way in a traffic lane. Head-on crashes occur as a result of a driver’s inadvertent actions—as with run-off-road (ROR) encroachments—or deliberate actions—e.g., executing a passing maneuver on a two-lane road.

Preventive measures could have helped prevent this accident.  Measures such as traffic signs and road surface markings to help guide drivers through curves, as well as separating opposing lanes of traffic with wide central reservation (or median) and median barriers to prevent crossover incidents. Median barriers are physical barriers between the lanes of traffic, such as concrete barriers or cable barriers. These are actually roadside hazards in their own right, but on high speed roads, the severity of a collision with a median barrier is usually lower than the severity of a head-on crash.
