May 7, 2013: A recent  collision illustrates the need for drivers on fast-moving interstates to give plenty of room between cars and drive at appropriate speeds.  The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened just after 7 p.m. on the I-295 west beltway at mile marker 1 just before the Interstate 95 interchange.  According to an FHP report, the motorcycle was traveling behind a Saturn Saturn Aura in the center lane. The driver of the Saturn slowed to a stop for traffic and the motorcyclist did not stop in time. The motorcyclist was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash  could have potentially been avoided if motorists would have  slowed down.  The next time you are driving and traffic is heaving, slow down. Also, remember the following when driving around motorcycles:
 
 Allowing adequate space between vehicles

  • Obeying the posted speed limit
  • Turn off cell phones when driving
  • Drive sober
  • Looking for riders before pulling onto roadways or changing lanes
  • Slowing down when approaching traffic signals
  • Observing riders’ right-of-way
