School Bus Accident results in 4 students injured

News4Jax reports on an early morning crash that occurred on Wednesday due to a school bus accident.  According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred on Interstate 95 near International Golf Parkway and  injured four students.  Patrolmen said 11 students were on the bus at 6:50 a.m. when it left southbound lanes and hit a line of trees. It took nearly an hour for firefighters to cut free a student who was trapped in the bus. The student was flown to UF Health Jacksonville with serious injuries. Three others students were taken to Baptist South by ambulance. The FHP said the 59-year-old man driving the bus was not injured. The bus was headed to Pacetti Bay Middle School, according to school district representative Ms. Langston.   “What we know right now is that 10 students were on the bus headed to Pacetti Bay Middle School. We have reached out to the parents. We do have another school bus that is en route to transport them to school,” Langston said early Wednesday.
The statistics for injuries are high when you are involved in accident with a school bus. There were 1,236 fatal school transportation-related crashes from 2001 to 2010, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Between 2001 and 2010, the 1,236 fatal school transportation-related crashes accounted for 0.34% of the total 363,839 fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes.  From 2001 to 2010, 1,368 people died in school transportation-related crashes, which is an average of 137 fatalities per year. Of those, 8% are riding in the buses.Since 2004, NHTSA found, 106 people overall, both children and adults, have been killed while riding in or driving a school bus. Of the 106 people killed,  61 were passengers and 45 were drivers.
